Baksoman, Ubud Vibes and Fields of Rice
It started over 3 years ago.
When I began making this EP, I didn't even know, I was making it. First, I wrote Baksoman. It just poured out of my pen. Two years past Ubud Vibes, which originally was a rap to a hiphop beat. Fields of rice came one year later, just 2 days, after moving into the middle of the Balinese rice fields. My good friend Ray, who plays the congas and the Bakso-bowl on the EP, suggested to book a studio for a few hours. Btw, I met Ray after I played Baksoman in Ubud for the first time. He came up, said how much he loved the song and we've been friends ever since.
I decided to record these three songs, because I like how all of them relate to Indonesia. A few weeks earlier we met this great drummer, Malte, during a gig at Kedungu Kolektif. Guess the first song we played together. Baksoman. Of course. Both, Ray and I saw Malte's talent, so I invited him to play the cajon on the recording. He was super keen and turned out to be a pro in the studio. The day of the recording I was recovering from flu-like symptoms with fatigue and headaches. However, my mind was set on my vision. My manifestation manager, Gia, made sure I could focus on keeping my energy up. She always stays calm like a mountain in a storm. A true New Yorker. Toni, was our engineer that day. A speedy wizard on the mixing board. Everything went flawless and we put each song down in 2-3 takes. Next step was mixing and mastering. Only one person came to mind. I met Dane Taylor a few years prior in the surf of Nusa Lembongan. Back then, I had no idea, what a masterful sound engineer he was. We've been wanting to work together since we met and I knew, now, the time was right. The process was new to me, because I've always mixed my own music. I told Dane what the songs mean to me and we bounced a few voice notes forth and back. A few days later, the first mixes came in and shortly after, the EP was finished. I'm not overstating by saying, my mind was blown.
Making this EP was so transformational on many levels. I wrote these songs as odes of love to the people, the culture and nature of Indonesia. In return, I received warm-hearted collaborations, authentic friendships, and the proof that music has the power to unite the world. All we need to do is share it.
Endlessly grateful.
